Officina Monviso: When the Mountains Become a Place of Connection and Inclusion

Mountains can be much more than a destination for hiking. They can become places where people of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities come together to explore nature and share meaningful experiences.

This is the vision behind Officina Monviso, a project that has built a strong network of public institutions, local services, associations, volunteers, and professionals over the years. Together, they work towards making hiking experiences more accessible, inclusive, and community-oriented.

The 2026 summer edition brought hundreds of participants to the trails of the valleys in the provinces of Cuneo and Turin. Each event featured routes designed to accommodate different needs, often including shorter and more accessible alternatives that could be enjoyed with a joëlette or, in many cases, by wheelchair users.

Behind every excursion is careful planning. Social service professionals, hiking and nature guides, volunteers, local sections of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), and many community organisations collaborate to create safe and inclusive experiences, adapting each route to the needs of the participants.

Throughout July, the different events combined nature, culture, and community. Walks accompanied by traditional music, visits to local producers, and shared meals with local communities turned every outing into an opportunity to experience the mountains not only as a landscape, but also as a place of connection and participation.

One of the defining features of Officina Monviso is its holistic approach to accessibility. The focus goes beyond the trail itself, embracing the entire experience—from welcoming participants and planning accessible routes to providing support along the way and building strong partnerships with local organisations.

The project will continue beyond the summer. New activities are already planned for autumn, including the rescheduled hike postponed because of bad weather and additional events dedicated to discovering the mountain landscapes of the region.
