A journey is not just about the places we visit. It is also an opportunity to discover traditions, meet local communities and explore a destination through different experiences.

In the Lower Maira Valley, in the province of Cuneo, this idea takes shape through a tourism experience that combines nature, culture and gastronomy, with particular attention to the needs of people with disabilities.

Featured in the Piemonte for All – Accessible and Sustainable catalogue, the itinerary offers three days exploring some of the valley's most representative locations, highlighting its local heritage through an approach focused on accessibility.

From History to Occitan Traditions

The journey begins in the area of Villar San Costanzo, where a walk near the ancient Benedictine abbey of San Pietro in Vincoli offers an opportunity to discover the valley's religious and rural history.

The itinerary continues to Dronero, with a visit to the historic Mulino della Riviera, a reminder of the traditional activities that have shaped the lives of local communities.

Among the experiences included is the Ciciu del Villar Nature Reserve, known for its unusual rock formations, one of the most distinctive features of the area's natural landscape.

Culture also plays an important role. The programme includes a visit to the Sòn de Lenga – Espaci Occitan Museum, dedicated to preserving and promoting the Occitan language and traditions.

Gastronomy is another essential part of the experience, offering opportunities to discover local products and traditional recipes that reflect the close relationship between the territory, its history and its communities.

An Experience Designed for Different Needs

One of the most interesting aspects of this proposal is its attention to welcoming people with different accessibility needs.

According to the catalogue, the itinerary is also suitable for people with physical and mobility disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, as well as cognitive, intellectual and relational disabilities.

An accessible private transport service equipped with a wheelchair lift is also available upon request, making it easier to travel between the different stops.

These are important features, as the accessibility of a tourism experience depends not only on the characteristics of individual locations, but also on the possibility of organising transport, participating in activities and receiving hospitality suited to each person's needs.

The itinerary is offered between March and October, with technical organisation provided by the Consorzio Turistico Valle Maira.

Accessibility as Part of the Travel Experience

The value of an itinerary like this lies in its ability to connect different aspects of the territory: natural heritage, historical memory, cultural traditions, local products and tourism services.

For us at Heimat, sharing these experiences also means highlighting how inclusive tourism can develop through collaboration between organisations and professionals working within the same territory.

Accessibility is not simply a feature of buildings or routes. It is an approach that should be integrated into the entire travel experience, from planning to hospitality.

Through Piemonte Accessibile, we will continue to highlight itineraries and projects that help make Piedmont an increasingly open and welcoming destination for everyone.
