Turin continues to invest in its urban green spaces. Over the next three years, 2,789 new trees will be planted along some of the city's main boulevards as part of the project "Torino cresce nel verde e nella salute" ("Turin Grows in Green and Health"), a joint initiative by the City of Turin, the ASL Città di Torino (Local Health Authority), and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.
The project aims to preserve and enhance one of Turin's most distinctive features: its historic tree-lined avenues. With more than 60,000 trees stretching across approximately 300 kilometres of streets, Turin is one of Italy's greenest cities, where urban nature plays a vital role in both the landscape and the quality of everyday life.
The initiative includes the restoration of 55 tree-lined streets across the city. The selected locations were identified based on missing trees and the strategic importance of each avenue for the urban environment.
The first phase of planting has already begun, with additional work scheduled for the autumn and the following years.
In some areas, new tree species that are better adapted to rising temperatures and changing climate conditions will be introduced to ensure healthier and more resilient urban forests.
More Trees, Better Quality of Life
Research has consistently shown that urban trees provide significant environmental and health benefits.
Among their many advantages, trees help to:
reduce the urban heat island effect during summer;
improve air quality;
absorb traffic noise;
support mental health and overall well-being;
increase urban biodiversity.
The project will also include scientific monitoring to assess how greener streets positively affect both public health and environmental quality.
Preserving Turin's Identity
Tree-lined boulevards have always been an essential part of Turin's urban identity. This initiative is not simply about planting new trees, but about protecting and renewing a historic landscape for future generations.
Historic avenues will retain their traditional tree species, while more climate-resilient varieties will be introduced where environmental conditions have significantly changed.
A Positive Step for the City
Across Europe, cities are increasingly recognising the importance of investing in urban green infrastructure. Trees are far more than decorative elements: they help combat climate change, improve public spaces, and make cities healthier and more enjoyable places to live.
With the planting of 2,789 new trees, Turin is taking another important step towards becoming a greener, healthier, and more resilient city for both residents and visitors.
